Finishing up a bike ride late Tuesday afternoon, I passed the sign board outside Glen Ellen Community Church at the southern end of Warm Springs Road. It read “Politicians can talk but they can’t deliver Heaven”. It got me thinking the rest of the way home. What if………..? What if our political candidates had to deliver their messages through gentle, powerful parables? What if our national political discourse had the grace, good will, tolerance and willingness to listen that we experience at Kenwood Community Church? What would that be like?
Our family lived in Japan for several years and we were awe-struck by the esteem, respect and reverence that the culture had for its sensei, the elders of the population, those deemed wise simply by virtue of their age and experience. And then I thought of us, our own congregation of sensei. What kind of impact might we have on the discussions in our larger society, by virtue of our age, our experience, and yes, our wisdom. How can we do that? What if………?
