Pastor Jim and I have been talking about having a book discussion soon around Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. The author is a neurosurgeon from Boston who has done a wonderful job looking at the final chapter of our lives as an opportunity to live with grace, meaning and dignity rather than prolonging it with the increasingly extraordinary means of modern Western medicine and the protective and frequently sterile environment of institutional nursing homes. It is a message for healthcare providers and most importantly for ourselves. If you would like to co-lead this discussion or simply to participate in it, please let Jim or myself know as we want to find a time and place that works most effectively for everyone. If you have not yet read the book, we urge you to do so.
