Sound and Fury
Once again, we are smack dab in the middle of our every-four-years political hoopla. They come and go and the Church (large 'C') just keeps plugging along. Through good times and bad, with tyrants and dictators seeking power and attention, the Church just has survived all of it.
Our long, long history dates back to the Roman Empire (no voting there!), to the Middle Ages, to the years of the Enlightenment, Hitler, etc., and the Church has survived it all.
Every four years when the heat is turned up in our political life, I need to remember that we, the universal Christian Church, has seen it all before. Sometimes we have been faithful to Christ's vision and the Gospel, other times in Church history, some cheerfully cooperated with and supported the worst in us. Other times, the Church kept its head, trusted in the Lordship of Christ, and carried on.
I take our seasons of intense politics seriously, but I hope, not too. We are a part of a centuries old movement, which seems to be indestructible, in spite of our own terrible mistakes, and the clanging symbols of our public life. We have been called into this for the long haul. I take comfort in that.
Bless you all.
